1

Understanding the Grid

Sudoku is played on a 9Γ—9 grid divided into nine 3Γ—3 boxes. Each row, column, and 3Γ—3 box must contain the numbers 1-9 without repetition.

2

Starting Strategy

Look for rows, columns, or boxes that already have many numbers filled in. These give you the best clues for where to place the next number.

3

Using Notes

Use the notes feature to mark possible numbers for each cell. This helps you track multiple possibilities and make logical deductions.

4

Process of Elimination

If a number can only go in one cell in a row, column, or box, that's where it belongs. Eliminate impossible options systematically.

Solving Techniques

Beginner Techniques

Naked Singles

When a cell can only contain one possible number, fill it in immediately. This is the most basic and essential technique.

1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 Only 9 is missing β†’ Must be 9!
The highlighted cell can only be 9 because all other numbers (1-8) already exist in this 3Γ—3 box.

Hidden Singles

When a number can only go in one cell within a row, column, or box, even if that cell has other possibilities.

1,2,3 1,2 2,3 1,3 1,2,5 5βœ“ 1,3 2,3 1,2 1,2,3 5 only appears in one cell β†’ Must be 5!
Even though the highlighted cell has multiple candidates (1,2,5), it's the only cell where 5 can go in this box.

Intermediate Techniques

Naked Pairs

When two cells in a row, column, or box can only contain the same two numbers, you can eliminate those numbers from other cells in that unit.

Row 3: 1,4,7,9 4,7 1,4,7 4,7 1,7,9 6 Pair: {4,7} Remove 4,7 from other cells
Two cells contain only {4,7}. This means 4 and 7 must occupy these two cells, so they can be removed from all other cells in the row.

Pointing Pairs

When a candidate number appears only in one row or column within a box, it can be eliminated from that row or column outside the box.

8 only in top row of box β†’ Eliminate 8 from rest of row 8 8 1,2 1,2,3 2,3 1,3 8 1,2 8 2,3
The number 8 only appears in the top row of the box, so it can be eliminated from the rest of that row outside the box.

Box/Line Reduction

If a number in a box is confined to a single row or column, eliminate that number from the rest of the row or column outside the box.

5 confined to middle row β†’ Eliminate 5 from other rows in box 5 5 1,2 5 5
Since 5 can only appear in the middle row of this box, eliminate it from other rows within the same box.

Advanced Techniques

X-Wing

When a candidate appears in exactly two rows and two columns forming a rectangle, you can eliminate that candidate from other cells in those columns (or rows).

4 4 4 4 4 4 4 4 Col 3 Col 7 Pattern: Rectangle 4 appears only at corners in 2 rows and 2 columns β†’ Eliminate 4 from rest of columns
The candidate 4 forms a rectangle at row 2/6, columns 3/7. This means 4 can be eliminated from other cells in columns 3 and 7.

Swordfish

An extension of X-Wing using three rows and three columns. Very powerful for Expert-level puzzles.

C2 C5 C8 3Γ—3 Pattern Candidate in 3 rows confined to same 3 columns β†’ Eliminate from other cells in those 3 columns
Like X-Wing but with 3 rows and 3 columns. The candidate appears in only these positions across 3 rows, confined to 3 columns.

XY-Wing

A chain of three cells with specific bi-value patterns that allows elimination of candidates in cells that see both endpoints.

Pivot shares X(3) with Wing1, Y(7) with Wing2 β†’ Both wings share Z(9) β†’ Eliminate 9 from cells seeing both wings XY {3,7} Pivot XZ {3,9} Wing 1 YZ {7,9} Wing 2 9 others Eliminate 9
Three bi-value cells form a chain. The pivot cell {3,7} connects to wings {3,9} and {7,9}. Since Z(9) must be in one of the wings, eliminate 9 from any cell that sees both wings.

Strategy Tips

🎯

Start with Easy Wins

Begin by filling in the most obvious numbers. Look for rows, columns, or boxes with the most numbers already filled.

πŸ“

Use Notes Liberally

Don't try to keep everything in your head. Use the notes feature to track possibilities for each cell.

πŸ”

Scan Systematically

Check each number 1-9 in turn, looking for where it can be placed. This systematic approach prevents missing opportunities.

⏸️

Take Breaks

If you're stuck, pause and come back later. Fresh eyes often spot patterns you missed before.

🧩

Focus on Constraints

Look for cells with the fewest possibilities. These are usually the easiest to solve and can trigger chain reactions.

⚑

Practice Daily

Regular practice improves pattern recognition. Start with Easy puzzles and gradually increase difficulty.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

❌

Guessing Too Early

Avoid guessing unless absolutely necessary. Use logical deduction and techniques first. Guessing can lead to cascading errors that are hard to fix.

❌

Not Updating Notes

When you fill in a number, remember to remove it from notes in all related cells (same row, column, and box). Outdated notes lead to mistakes.

❌

Rushing Through Easy Numbers

Even obvious placements should be double-checked. A single mistake early on can make the puzzle unsolvable later.

❌

Ignoring Patterns

Advanced techniques exist for a reason. Learn to recognize patterns like pairs, triples, and pointing pairs to solve harder puzzles.

❌

Playing Above Your Level

Start with easier difficulties and work your way up. Jumping to Expert too quickly leads to frustration and bad habits.
